A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.0

I won’t spoil anything, but I’m utterly confused by that ending! Obviously I know she’s planning more books in the series, but…I have no idea how we got THERE from where we started.

One of my favorite things about JLA as an author is the way she writes battle scenes. There were a few in this one and I enjoyed all of them! She has this ability to create tension with little nuggets of suspense while still painting an extremely vivid picture of what is unfolding. For readers like me who visualize the book they’re reading, this is such a treat!

What I didn’t like, and generally my beef with everything in this series, is there are multiple sections that seem to just drag out adding little to nothing to the plot. It makes the book unnecessarily long and rips my attention away. These sections also often result in completely abandoned plot points, or ones that are abruptly revisited much later on once you’ve forgotten about how that thread initially began.

That aside, I really do enjoy the characters in the FBAA world. I will admit, I liked Nyktos better in The Crown of Guilded Bones, but Sera was actually more of a favorite of mine than Poppy. I’m sure this book provides some background to what might happen in the next FBAA book and at the very least give us some more insight into Nyktos as I have this feeling we’ll see him in a much larger role in the newest book!
