Home for Christmas by Susan Branch

inspiring lighthearted fast-paced

5.0

Susan writes in the beginning of this book that her nieces asked her to read them a story. She chose a 1938 book called “Once on Christmas” by Dorothy Thompson, which tells the story of a grandmother telling her grandchildren about what Christmas was like when she was young. So, it inspired her to write a story about one of her Christmases over 65 years ago, in 1945. She recalls so many details of how magical her mother made Christmas and life itself, for her and her 7 brothers and sisters. Like always, the book is handwritten by her, with her precious illustrations. It definitely is a sweet way to remember the Christmas season.

“Books meant the world to me when I was a little girl. As the oldest of eight children, “alone time” in our house was hard to come by. But it didn’t matter, because I had books and the real wood disappeared when I was reading… I never heard a sound, I was so engrossed in the adventures of the March family, or learning how to play the “Glad Game” with Pollyanna. Reading was like my secret power.” From Forward

“I’ll light the fire, you bring your tea - sit close and let me tell you a story.”
