Excession is extremely funny and readable - some of the conversation between ships’ Minds may go on a little long, but it’s fine apart from that. It’s also a Culture novel that relates to other events in Culture history: the Idiran war is not only mentioned but is quite significant, and Hofoen among the Affront is rather similar to Gurgeh in The Player of Games, except that his attitude is different. (And the Affront idea that one’s ambassadors should not be too good at dealing with foreigners, for fear of looking soft and thus reflecting badly on the nation, is both funny and plausible.)
