The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee

5.0

This book! McGhee brilliantly lays out how racism and capitalism is harming us all, including white people. She uses concrete examples of how racism has been used to divide us on economic issues and weaken our government, but she also provides successful examples of how multicultural coalitions have been successful (e.g., the fight for 15). McGhee really demonstrates how white supremacy and the need to protect whiteness is baked so deeply into American culture that we don't see how our diversity is an asset and we are losing out on public good while the wealthier become more wealthy. I finished The Sum of Us with a renewed sense of hope and a will to act.
