This book series manages to feel both contemporary and old-fashioned at the same time as well as fantastical and realistic. But it doesn't always seem like the two worlds meld together well. However, I still ended up enjoying the story, even if it got overly complicated and quite a bit muddled by the end. It also could have had at least three fewer characters.
