The Duke and I by Julia Quinn
3.0
lighthearted fast-paced
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

Pros: I think Julia Quinn's strong suit is her character dialogue, and writing fairly realistic sibling relationships.

Cons: I knew going into this book about the non-con, so I skipped those pages. I regret not also skipping the insufferable pages where we got to see Daphne's woe is me attitude after assaulting her partner, and Simon's self-hatred related to his disability. If I had known about the aftermath of the assault, I wouldn't have picked up this book.

Other cons include all of the so-called major tensions or driving points of the plot being solved so quickly and without giving us any time to really process or see how the characters feel. There's no stakes being built, and I'm aware this is a romance and therefore the stakes aren't supposed to be groundbreaking, but then why are there so many little crises and fires they get put out almost immediately?

Most of my other cons are me being a pedantic Regency era nerd who complains about being taken out of the story when there are historical inaccu acies that don't serve a purpose 🤓 I know that many inaccuracies in period romances are to help the reader identify with and sympathize with characters in a very different era and culture than our own, but we can do still do that if she wears a chemise.

Fine as a palette cleanser, but overall not super enjoyable.
