not sure who recommended me this read but I wanna thank them and give them a big kiss on the lips. I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS BOOK BUT ILL KEEP IT SHORT AND DESCRIBE IT IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY. this felt like a mix of ghibli and witch hat atelier ( in good way! ) and as a fan of these medias, I wanna highly recommend this book to those people who love and enjoy of said medias. this didn’t read like your standard run off the mill middle grade novel. this book features a copious amount of baking, a feisty female protagonist and other lovable and equally fleshed out characters, it has a gripping plot and a complex magic system. ALSO ALSOOOO FOUND FAMILY DYNAMICS, I’m a total sucker for books that has a well written found family in it and this book delivered. warning tho! this isn’t a completely light-hearted read as it has depictions of neglect and abuse also the death of Joris was terrifying. but hey, he deserves it. this book also teaches a very big overall lesson that is we must take care of Mother Nature unlike Joris who got rid of the trees from the land, only planting tulips to accumulate wealth that caused natural disasters which is flooding to easily happen when it can be avoided
