Johnny has such a lovely way of mixing Mexican culture into their books through organic language and actions, just like you would experience in so many parts of the US including Texas where this book is set. Give me all the queer Chacane stories!
This story felt realistic with the amount of affirming people in Gabi's life as he navigated a bi awakening, while also showing how toxic masculinity still exists in spaces like futbol and some families.
Vale was a caring and considerate friend and boyfriend. Seeing their third act tension was painful!
This book does a great job of focusing on very real conflict queer young ppl (or ppl of any age) might face while experiencing self discovery.
My biggest gripe:
The character mentions penatrative s3x as real s3x after they've been intimate multiple times, and I can't keep having this conversation, esp with queer books. I did give some room for an 18yo to think this, but because the audience is also learning, this approach still feels non-inclusive to me.
