The Dutch House by Ann Patchett

4.0

As evidenced by the title, The House is as much a main character as Daniel or Maeve. The prose is as elegant as the furnishings described - like Cyril Conroy the builder, Patchett is the architect of this story that she builds from the ground up. My only author complaint is that she throws around the word “poverty”, which it doesn’t seem the characters ever actually experience in any meaningful way, despite her telling us (not showing).

The characters are a little insufferable at times, if only because I see the most annoying parrts of myself or my own family reflected in the ways they handle (or don’t) their traumas.

Bonus review: Tom Hanks’ narration is 5 stars.
