Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

This book was so much fun to read!

I went into this book blind not knowing what to expect and I can honestly say it blew me away. I typically don't read sci fi but upon finishing I've immediately started reading his other books. I must have more!

The book follows Ryland Grace, as he awakens in space on the Hail Mary, a spaceship on a last ditch save Earth mission, except he doesn't know what he is meant to do or even who he is. The novel is told in current time and flashbacks as we learn about Grace's past and the lead up to the mission and why Earth needs saving to begin with. We learn alongside Grace as the novel develops.

The best part of the book for me was Grace himself. He is hilarious! I have not honestly laughed out loud so often in a book in a very long time. I just love his quirkiness and humor.

The book is a very science sci fi. Grace is a scientist, he does science but this is what makes this story unique and exciting to me. You don't need a degree in physics, astronomy etc to understand what he's talking about but at the same time it doesn't feel dumbed down and every detail explained.

There is alot about physics and astronomy and other things I dont even fully understand, but at no point doesn't this feel too over the top. I loved Grace's explanations and experiments as he tries to figure out what and where he is. The book doesn't spend a long time explaining the science it just tells it and gets on with the story.

The ending was slightly predictable but wrapped things up in a satisfying and interesting way.

If there is ever a sequel id read it in a heartbeat.
