Started with an interesting world, but ended up falling into some very pulpy tropes. An enjoyable flick, but not much more.

Probably fun if you're a teenager and want to have some self-insert escapism.
EDIT: An edit after starting the 2nd book. This one feels a lot like setting up a bigger world that works better. I found this book lacking, but starting from book 2 I had a lot more fun with it. Take that as you will.
