Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
4.0

A sweet, light, YA romance novel that is lifted by excellent characterization and great voice. The immediacy of young adult novels has always been what draws me to them, and "Simon" is no exception. I'm surprised this is Albertalli's first novel; she writes with confidence and definition.

It's important to me that LTBTQ+ teens get romances like this as well, though I'd love to see more in which the character is already out. Forced outing as a plot point is common and true to life, but it features too heavily in novels about gay teens.

I got so involved in the novel that I kept a mental list of who Blue could be, with characters switching positions frequently. I'm sad to say that the person it ended up being was not on my list at all. That's why I can't give the book 5 stars; in a YA novel, there should be more than a hint.
