Two Truths and a Lie by April Henry
2.0

I had low expectations for this one, as I typically don’t like YA mysteries. However, this managed to fall even below those. The characters in this story were so underdeveloped that when something bad happened to any of them, I didn’t actually care because I didn’t feel any attachment to them. Even our main character had no distinguishable characteristics besides having two moms and being the “mom” figure herself, which isn’t enough to form a connection. Everyone was extremely immature as well, making this appear very Scary Movie rather than seeming like an actual creepy thriller.

Aside from the characters, the pacing was also very off. Half the book was spent setting the scene and introducing our characters (which didn’t go very well, considering I can’t tell you who any of them are now), and the ending wrapped up in approximately two pages. We literally went from a scene where we didn’t know who lived or died to an epilogue in which it’s explained that “oh yeah. they’re fine.”

I did like the last sentence of the book. It was cute. But it also turned a thriller into a romance and I kinda hate that, so I guess even the redeeming qualities of this one are not that redeeming. On the up side, at least it’s over now.
