Tokyo Tarareba Girls, Vol. 9 by Akiko Higashimura
4.0

The end! I’m glad I stuck with this series, even though I wasn’t feeling the first few volumes. Rinko and her friends definitely learn and grow over the course or the series, but so do Key and Hayasaka. In the end, it’s all about finding balance - yes, live in the moment and relish all the time you share with others, but also don’t forget to dream and plan and look to the future. And the big idea: looking back on the past and asking “what if?” doesn’t do anyone any good for multiple reasons. You can’t change the past, first of all, but maybe more importantly, everything that happened in the past got you to where you are today. I love all the conversations Rinko and Key had, about changing and growing together. It’s okay to compromise and change, but being forced to change who you are at the core is a dealbreaker, and no way to live. I also really loved Hayasaka’s understanding and encouragement of Rinko. This is about as happy of an ending as I could expect, so I’m pleased.

Quick note - each of these volumes have had pages of an advice column or something written by “milt and liver” - I honestly just skimmed those because even at the end, the advice they were giving seemed really antithetical to what the story was telling us.
