BOOK DESCRIPTION:
This FBI agent has come to expect almost anything—just not this…
Agent Mercedes Ramirez comes home to find a bloody and abused little boy on her front porch. He’s clutching a teddy bear an awful lot like the ones she gives children on the job. He tells her that an “angel” killed his parents. This angel made him “safe now” and brought him to Mercedes.
One-by-one, children keep showing up with the same story and the same teddy bears. Each child came from an abusive home. This “angel” is metering out her own form of justice, and the Crime Against Children team need to stop her before more people die, no matter the sort they were.
As the investigation continues, Mercedes’ old wounds are scraped open, and she begins to wonder if it will destroy her.
MY REVIEW:
Yes! After a disappointing second installment of this series, this book returned with a bang. I might have actually enjoyed this one more than ‘The Butterfly Garden’, and I didn’t believe that was possible.
I was brought to tears multiple times with this book. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart or those who are extra sensitive to child abuse. There’s a lot of brutality in this story, both on the childrens’ end and on Mercedes, but it isn’t gratuitous.
Mercedes is an extremely sympathetic character, and it felt only natural to be drawn into her story. By the end of this book, I felt like I really knew her. And believed in her. I think, out of all the characters in this series, Mercedes is the best and most well-rounded.
Hutchison redeemed this series with this book, and I will absolutely read more of her future work.
