Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

Quite a different experience to book one, with Lena now alone in the wilds trying to work out how to survive.
My first issue with this was getting used to the format. The story is told in ‘then’ and ‘now’ sections which means we’re learning how she copes in the wild while also learning how these actions have impacted on her life. This was, initially, confusing but it actually became intriguing as the stories start to link together.
We get to see a little more of the set-up with the resistance, but the actions of those fighting seemed extreme. The DFA remain a rather shadowy force, but it’s evident that their actions have quite important consequences.
Lena was a bit awkward in her roles initially, but as she is forced to adapt to her situation we see her get more resourceful.
When she is abducted with Julian, it is a weird scenario. Two opposing ideologies, but we soon see that Julian is not what we expect. Inevitably, perhaps, they are attracted to each other and I was surprised by how quickly they seem to gravitate to each other.
I was surprised by a couple of aspects linked to the ending. Learning a few of these details will, I am sure, have implications for how Lena will behave later.
