I do not do animal stories for the most part (outside of safe picture books) because I just can't handle them. I can read and watch some pretty brutal things, but anything involving animals being hurt or even just made SAD wrecks me. So, I knew reading this was a risk. However, after hearing so many lovely things about it, my middle-grade book loving, horror obsessed self could not resist. Though there were A LOT of moments that were difficult for me to sit through, the writing and storytelling skills of the author were so captivating that it was well worth it. This book was haunting and filled with horrors grounded in reality. Viewing the cruelty of the world through the most innocent of eyes is guaranteed to be heart-wrenching, but this book also gives glimpses of hope and love that are heart-warming.
