Meh. Several people recommended this book to me and it was...amateur. Apparently, this is Mr. Ford's only novel, and for good reason--he's really a short story author. He should stick to short stories. To be fair, the star-crossed lover plot is not my favorite genre--fine, it can give an otherwise good novel an added dimension, but it's rarely written well enough to supply the main plot for a novel without becoming trite, adolescent, and frankly, a waste of my reading time. With the exception of the Seattle references (yay, Seattle!), "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" read like the unattractive bastard child of "Farewell to Manzanar" and "Love in the Time of Cholera" (which are stellar examples of historical fiction and star-crossed lovers written incredibly well, respectively).
