Some hard truths
I have seen some positive and negative reviews of this book. I felt both ways about it while reading it. But, I cannot deny that thud man speaks truthfully about the world he grew up in. I am familiar with it in some ways, having taught in some economically dying areas. I did not live it, thank goodness. I appreciate that he not only does not blame but also realistically know there is no quick fix. This isn't a fairy tale of someone who "rose above" his surroundings. It is a tale of the effects of those surroundings.
