Summer Frost
by Blake Crouch
How far can AI go? How far is too far, and is that even far enough? This story made me say "oh my god" in more ways than I thought possible.
Max is a video game NPC designed to die in the prologue, but Riley takes a particular liking to Max and treats them like a special project after Max resists their repeated cutscene deaths. There's something autonomous and human about Max that workaholic Riley wants to explore further, but playing God could have a price.
I was gripped by this story. What a well-paced, wild ride.
