icanreadish 's review for:
Hell House
by Richard Matheson
incredibly slow, weird 70s dude stuff with homophobia (but as a lesbian, i didn't hate edith's obvi homo repression! i rather liked that! good luck, babe! indeed), and very grotesque imagery. but all of that kind of makes sense when the big reveal at the end shows us who, exactly, the ghost(s) of hell house is.
like come on the main villain is a raging misogynist who assaulted his own sister, then was also assaulted by a preacher (? fact check this either way he was both a perp and a victim), add on that his own self-hatred at his stature and fake parentage + copious amounts of cash to spend like it makes so much sense that he's a complete tormenter and weirdo!!!!!!!
it's not quite scary, definitely more of a dark comedy vibe, and it's more gross and body horror in a vein of early splatterpunk. most of the body horror is saved for women, of course :/, but it's hard to hold high expectations for 1) a horror novel written by a man & 2) a horror novel written by a man in the seventies.
still, it's kinda fun. more of a spooky halloween read than the random christmas setting. love the ending.
