The Push by Ashley Audrain
4.0
I could not put this book down! I am a huge fan of psychological thrillers, but as much as I enjoyed this book, I think a psychological drama would be more appropriate. The chapters are very short and succinct. Ashley makes a point to end each chapter in a dramatic way, which makes you want to keep reading.
This book examines the relationship between mother and child, past and present. It offers a glimpse into the darker side of motherhood. I can see this being a difficult read for some people.
Motherhood terrifies me, and this book confirms many of the fears that I personally hold about having children. It’s like Ashley read my mind. It was comforting to think that there are other women out there who hold the same fears and anxieties about motherhood. I think this was a great novel to encourage more conversations about the experience of motherhood.
I was frustrated by the ending when I first read it. But after sitting with it for a little longer, I think the abruptness adds to the “thrill”. It forces your brain to put the pieces together and infer your own conclusion.
