Tranquility by Tuesday: 9 Ways to Calm the Chaos and Make Time for What Matters by Laura Vanderkam

5.0

A really lovely book. I pre-ordered this and was also able to attend a Zoom Q&A with the author, which was a nice addition. I have been trying to implement the principles into my day-to-day life. The one I have most trouble with is Take one night for you, mostly because as written Vanderkam thinks that as much as possible, you should leave the house to do this activity. While I completely understand, as yet, I do not have children, and so I very much want to be a homebody and work on my projects instead of having to exit the house and find some other activity to add to my list.

Thus far my favorite rule is Effortful before effortless, because it frequently reminds me to do just a little bit of something high-value. The result is that I write book reviews instead of reading more (giving me a real feeling of accomplishment) and spend more time breathing.

Overall the book is well-organized. 9 chapters, 9 rules. Each rule is introduced, followed by a solid reasoning as to why this rule is good for you. What I really enjoyed was reading the notes from the people Vanderkam experimented with-- what worked for them, how they modified the rules, what did not work for them. It gave the feeling of being along on an experiment with many other people, and I enjoyed that. Recommended to anyone working and wanting to do something for themselves at the same time. I do think this book (along with many others, including 168 Hours, I Know How She Does It, and Deep Work by Cal Newport) really helped me with my general overwhelm recently.
