White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L. Armentrout
4.0

To be honest, I wasn’t exactly sold on White Hot Kiss or the entire Dark Elements series when we first found out about it. Gargoyles just aren’t high on my “favorite subject matter” list and I’m wasn’t crazy about the title (I’m still not crazy about the title), but I decided to give the prequel, Bitter Sweet Love, a try. I adored it. I instantly loved the characters and world, and I felt like Bitter Sweet Love set up White Hot Kiss perfectly.

No matter what you think about Jennifer’s books, she knows how to grab your attention and hold it. I’m never bored reading one of her books, and White Hot Kiss was no different. From the first pages I already cared for Layla and Zayne. It took me a little while to warm up to Roth (“bad boys” are becoming slightly boring to me) but eventually I figured out the appeal for this particular bad boy, and by the end of the book Roth became my favorite character.

White Hot Kiss was sold to me as a story about gargoyles fighting demons, and the story does have some of that. However, I found White Hot Kiss to be more about the demons and Roth, and less about the gargoyles and Zayne. I wanted more gargoyles. I personally haven’t read any other story about gargoyles so I wanted to know more about what makes them tick, and I just didn’t get that. I’m hoping as the series goes on we get to learn more about these stone creatures.

Let’s talk about the romance in this book. Is anybody up for an impossible love triangle? Because White Hot Kiss has one for you! Oh, Zayne, Layla, and Roth. What are we going to do with you guys? Look, I don’t like love triangles. They cause me to pick a certain person and I just want to love everybody. I was all for Zayne at the beginning of this book, but like I said before, Roth definitely has a certain appeal. I feel like Zayne has a back up plan so maybe I should be rooting for Roth. Eh, they are both good guys so I don’t even know. Why can’t one be an absolute tool? Also, I know Zayne and Layla “can’t” be together because of her demon blood but why is her kissing him another issue? It’s not like every time she touches somebody she sucks their soul out. Is she scared she’ll get too caught up in the moment? I just don’t see her sucking away Zayne’s soul when she loves him so much.

While I wasn’t originally sold on White Hot Kiss, by the end I was absolutely in love with it. This is another great Jennifer L. Armentrout book. I loved reading it and I devoured every single page. I can’t wait to read Stone Cold Touch.
