The Iron Raven
by Julie Kagawa
I was so excited to learn Julie Kagawa would return to Nevernever with its magic and danger and eclectic characters. I’ve always been on Team Ash but I’ve always had a soft spot for Puck and looked forward to his story. Needless to say, I was not disappointed.
The story focused more about Puck’s journey as a character than the true threat to Nevernever. That isn’t to say there wasn’t a threat, but Kagawa’s greatest strength has always been her characters, and that is on fully display here.
She effortlessly blends in lore of the Fae with Puck’s past personality and current self. She creates a fantastic character drama with a new and old cast. I really enjoyed Nyx, the one person in the Nevernever who doesn’t know who Puck is, though I have to say that the bromance between Ash and Puck is still the highlight. Their interactions were my absolute favourite, especially as Puck warred with himself.
The setting and magic are fantastical and unique, and I truly felt like I were immersed in the story. Despite being more of a jumping off point, I did find myself invested and curious as to what this new threat is, and who might be behind it. There are lots of questions, new parts of the fae lands that I’ve never seen before, and I hope there will be more adventures with this memorable cast.
Definitely a must have for fans of the original series and lovers of Fae lore!
