"There isn't a woman in the world who is _just_ a housewife" is such a thesis statement. The actual characters and plot floundered a little for me, with caricature-like exaggerations, rapid cuts, and a hunan-intelligence dog. But the relationships have heart, and the recognition and respect for women and, separately, for "women's work" is powerful. I also found it a fast and engrossing read despite not necessarily being fun. I had hoped it would be a good book to discuss, and there's so much going on to be fodder for that discussion.
Also, Elizabeth's hair is mentioned to be "buttered burnt toast" and I'm calling that the same as mine for my reading challenge prompt.
