Lonesome Dove
by Larry McMurtry
I grew up in Wyoming, a self-proclaimed cowboy state. I spent much of my adolescence struggling to decide what kind of role the old west would play in my identity. I never really reached a conclusion. As such, I've largely avoided the Western genre and its reminders of awkward wardrobe choices and memories of a few hard, sweat-filled days surrounded by livestock. My father, much more assured of his identity and its influences, loved the show this book spawned. I have memories of hiding just out of sight of him and his bedroom television, listening to Robert Duvall's and Tommy Lee Jones' voices until I was noticed and reminded of my age and that show's intended audience. Call it nostalgia, but this book resonated with me. I felt like I knew and understood the characters. It was their predicaments in these stories that I saw echoes of in the men I admired as a child.
