Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa
2.0

Fantasy is not my genre. I picked this up anyway for two reasons: 1) People say you should read things out of your comfort zone every once in a while, and 2) My mum bought it but found it too violent for her taste and was going to return it, but I loved the cover and wanted to keep it, and had to read it so I could justify to myself doing so.

I had a few days of mindless, monotonous tasks ahead of me and thought it was a good opportunity to listen to another audiobook, and my library had this one available. I'm glad because I don't think I would have finished it otherwise. Part of that is probably that fantasy isn't a genre I usually enjoy, but mostly it just felt too long. I was interested enough in the main premise to keep going but the side adventures dragged the story out longer than it needed to be and I was getting really bored. I feel like if they had been taken out of the main book and made into a novella-type thing I would have enjoyed them more.

I also found Yumeko's overly naive and chirpy personality a little grating at times but she eventually grew on me.

If I'm honest, the only thing that kept me reading was the romance. There wasn't much but I'm a sucker for a grumpy/sunshine trope. It was cute and I want more.

After I finished the audiobook, I skimmed through the physical copy and realised that the chapters don't tell you whose perspective you're reading from, you just have to figure it out as you go. That would have driven me nuts. At least there were different voices for each POV in the audio.

Overall, it was okay. I'm not really the target audience as a non-fantasy reader so I don't want to be hard on it, but it was a 2-star for me.
