Journey Under the Midnight Sun
by Keigo Higashino
I had to let this book simmer in my soul before I could scoop up a ladle full of feelings. What a week it has been. Uff. My journey with Ryo, Yuki, and, Sasagaki came to a chilling end quite literally because I had goosebumps on my skin by the time I finished and my body temperature, I'm quite certain was a degree lower than usual.
This book is no typical mystery. It is a fast paced thriller that hitchhikes with peripheral yet intimate characters to the plot, on a journey of 20 years, and upon reaching its destination it still remains elusive to the reader. It makes you question who the real hero and the villain is. Sure, there are some inexplicable moral flaws that point out the bad guys clearly, but there is an underlying question looming there that will perhaps make you shake your head dismissively so you don't end up siding with the "wrong" ones.
The title " Journey Under The Midnight Sun" concretises its meaning deeply and clearly on the last page and that to me is pure poetry, a feeling that I chase when I pick up a book and is met by only a few, like this.
A mighty 5 stars for this one. *Here I imagine Higashino bowing out of the stage as the crowd keeps applauding*
