The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka
5.0
This is the type of book that I wish I could discuss in a literature class.
I REALLY enjoyed this, quite unexpectedly! I checked out the audiobook from the library to try to chip away at my reading goal. The prose was absolutely beautiful and loved the unexpected punch this book brought. It does feel a bit that the first half and second half of the book are two entirely separate stories. The first half surrounded the lives of the swimmers at this pool-- their lives both in and out of the pool and how they all connect to it. The second half of the book focuses on only one of the swimmers: Alice, as she faces cognitive decline. In a way, these two halves feel like separate short stories. Either way, I loved it. Disjointed stories, be damned.
