Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff

4.0

I came so close to DNF'ing this book, but I'm so glad I didn't. I had my DNF review all planned at about 66%. I was ready to draw clever comparisons between a world without a sun and a monochromatic experience for the reader. The surplus of vulgarity and profanity in the dialogue was not sufficient to voice my frustration. The grouchy protagonist mirrored my feelings as I slogged through his endless whining. His abusive, abrasive, relationships with every other character made me root for the other guys. BUT, he pulled it out.

The rare/brief moments of tenderness appearing near the ends of each timeline were somehow (barely) enough to make the endings feel satisfying. That, and the author's unique prose, (profanity aside) in addition to this new take on a falsely presumed tired creature feature have left me thirsty (sorry, I had to) for the next book in this series.
