Penny Dreadful
by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Andrew Hindraker
I really enjoyed Penny Dreadful which I watched on Netflix streaming (US). This volume is a prequel to the series focusing on Vanessa, Malcolm, his African companion, and vampires in the search for Sir Malcolm's daughter, Mina. As such, this volume did not include what most captivated me about this series -- the Frankenstein monster and Dorian Grey. (Strangely both of these characters were mentioned in the narrative after the collected comics but they didn't fit the story being told here.) The volume focuses on the Dracula tale with a flashback to an African expedition. I rated this at 3 stars because it really didn't engage me. To be honest, I liked the notes/narrative at the end the best. In addition to their brief discussion of the characters and particularly Vanessa, there's a great article on the vampire look and how an unknown, non-agented actor got the part.
