The Invisible Husband of Frick Island by Colleen Oakley

4.0

This book made me laugh and cry in equal measure. I hesitate to use the word heartwarming to describe it as I tend to stay far away from things that the word heartwarming can be used for, but I definitely could see this as a Hallmark or Lifetime movie. Anders is a journalist working for a local paper. He is sent to cover the annual cake walk on Frick Island. While on the remote island he finds a community that distrusts outsiders, but definitely takes care of their own. While stuck there for awhile he decides to do a podcast about the interesting things he has seen and people he has met on the island. One of the most interesting is Piper. He soon discovers that Piper is married or is she? Her husband was lost at sea but Piper still talks to him and walks him to the docks for work every morning. Anders can’t seem to understand why the whole town is indulging Piper in her delusion that her husband is still alive. Over the course of the story Anders learns the power of storytelling and the value of friendship and community.
