Beautiful Redemption by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

3.0

I read the first three books in this series and absolutely fell in love with first one, and thoroughly loved the other two. So, I had super high hopes for this book, and looked forward to reading it.

The story takes place after Ethan’s death; suicide to save Lena. Ethan is now living in an almost waiting world. Not the real world, because he is dead, but not quite heaven or hell. Like a half-land. Anyway, Ethan stays with his mother, happy to see her, but missing Lena, his caster girlfriend, dearly. He learns from his also dead relatives that he wasn’t supposed to die, but someone had changed the pages of the “books of moons. ” So, through a rough journey through the “half-world” and Lena praying that he returns, Ethan tries to get back to the real world; yes, Ethan tries to come back to life. Now, I realize half of my summary won’t make sense to anyone who hasn’t read the other three books, but s that’s how it is. Each books builds off of the other.

No joke; I have a list of quotes that I wrote down as I read this book because they were just so beautiful. Lena is a poet, so all throughout the story, she writes little poems of misery and love. They all truly capture the feelings of the story, and Lena’s emotions running wild. I will only put two…

“surrounded by strangers who love me
(un)strangers made strange
by pain”

“you can’t see
a bubble
once it’s
popped
I fought off the words.
But you couldn’t unpop a bubble.
Even I knew that.”

This story has two parts; one narrated by Ethan, the other by Lena. I actually didn’t enjoy this. Though necessary at times, I was already used to it just being narrated by Ethan. I wasn’t used to Lena’s literary voice, and I expected more.

I DEFINITELY recommend the first book in this series. I loved it. The other three were pretty good, but I expected the series to end with a BANG! instead of a pop. I still recommend it, because the series is a great read, but the last one wasn’t my favorite.
