Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
5.0

Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid has been on my shelf since February. It was part of my last in person haul from HPB before everything shut down. I read this in less than 24 hours - I could not put this down!

Such a Fun Age follows the aftermath of Emira, a black babysitter, who is accused of kidnapping her white client (sweet three year old Briar Chamberlin). The narration alternates between Emira, and her employer, the very rich (and white) Alix Chamberlin.

This was a very fast paced and enjoyable read for me. The opening scene in the grocery store where Emira is accused of kidnapping Briar was uncomfortable, and maddening. I realized how privileged I am to never have to worry about such accusations, just because my skin is white. While it’s not something I can fully understand, book me was right next to Emira, yelling and angry at the ignorant people accusing her.

I could write pages on Emira - she was so very real. At 25, she still isn’t sure what she wants to do with her life, but she gives her babysitting gig her all. Her interactions with Briar were heartwarming and my favorite part of the book. I found myself cheering for her throughout the book, and by the end, I was so dang proud of her. She admitted her mistakes, and then stood her ground. Without spoiling anything, she definitely makes a very bold move, and I applauded her for it.

I found Alix to be annoying and so self-absorbed. I wanted to breeze through her chapters so I could get back to Emira’s POV. The sad thing is, I know there are a lot of Alix’s in the world. She is a shining example of what I DON’T want to be. By the end of the book, I was furious with her and her actions. Reid certainly knows how to write to invoke very strong feelings.

The last chapter was the only part I didn’t overly care for. It read more like an epilogue, and crammed a lot into a few short pages. Otherwise, this was an absolutely amazing book, and I will definitely be recommending it to anyone who asks!
