Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

4.0

Surprisingly, I didn't enjoy this one as much as Hush, Hush. I found Hush, Hush exciting, gripping and generally a fantastic read. But there something missing in Crescendo. Maybe Hush, Hush was just hard to beat, or maybe you just start expecting a step up in sequels, and extra flavour added to the brew. Crescendo lacked this flavour, and although it was still thirst quenching, it wasn't quite the best around. The plot attempts to take a different direction, and whereas usually I'd have liked this, Nora's behaviour kind of ruined it for me.

Plot Overview
When Patch begins acting distant, and spending a lot of time with Nora's arch enemy, Marcie Miller, Nora is heartbroken. Why would Patch betray her like that? Was she just another girl? Subdued and miserable, Nora doesn't think much when her peculiar childhood friend Scott comes to live nearby with his mother, but slowly their friendship begins to grow again, and perhaps turn into something more. As Nora delves in to the dark secrets of her father's past, and his death, she learns things that will change her view on life, she also faces a heartbreaking choice: is Patch to be trusted, or not?

Sounds good right? And it is. It's just when Patch started acting like a jerk and hanging around with Marcie, Nora was still obsessed with him. Yeah, she broke up with him and said she was done, but throughout the book she keeps thinking about him, and she stops herself having the fun she deserves because of him. She doesn't need him, just because he's hot; she's strong enough to fend for herself, and find a guy that will like her back.
And yes I know that Patch had his reasons, but Nora didn't know that. All she knew was that he'd abandoned her for Marcie...

As for the writing, perfect as ever. It flowed and shimmered like a steaming river, bubbling with intrigue and deception. It was descriptive when necessary, but it didn't keep the story on hold. The plot, as I've mentioned above somewhere, very well thought out and exciting. I didn't much like Patch in this one, even though he wasn't trying to be a jerk to Nora. I don't know, he'd just lost something he had in the first book. Vee, Nora's bestfriend, is actually my favourite character. When her name is on a page, it instantly brightens up. She's bubbly, excitable and is always out for a good time. She's also always there for Nora, no matter what.
