Tomb Sweeping
by Alexandra Chang
This was a tough rating for me. Chang’s writing style is absolutely gorgeous and pretty flawless, however, a lot of stories really missed the mark for me. The endings to most of the stories weren’t just abrupt but seemingly incomplete. I understand they are slice-of-life stories, but the endings were so jarring and unsatisfying. HOWEVER, three stories brought me to tears and I thought they were perfect:
1. Klara - After I finished reading this, I sobbed and texted two of my friends that I loved them and wanted to catch up soon. The depiction of the slow fading of adult friendships was so painfully accurate and heartbreaking. It also made me feel less alone that others experience this.
2. A Visit - Another perfectly portrayed story, A Visit explores the relationships between adult children and their parents. The excitement, desire to impress, and need for approval, even as adults, was so well done.
3. Persona Development - As a woman who just had a child, I felt every part of this story in my bones. Just stunning.
So summing it all up: gorgeous writing but not all of the stories hit, but those that did, hit hard.
