I love Octavia Butler so much but I probably would have DNFed this book if it wasn't on a reading challenge.

While I found the vampire mythology and in theory the premise was something I should have loved I just couldn't get over the fact that the main character looks like a 10 year old black girl. She is usually viewed sexually by most other characters and her underage body is described in detail during sex scenes I had to skip. It's worsened by the fact that even by vampire standards she is underage but others of her species keep lusting after her.

I believe the point was meant to be about power, since she ends up seducing others through her vampire venom, is stronger than other vampires and stuff but I really couldn't get over it and it wasn't discussed in depth enough. It just ends up messy and quite sickening in total honesty.

The rest of the book wasn't as great, it becomes a really slow and boring courtroom drama later on.
