The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova

5.0

I enjoyed this book beginning to end. While the characters and story are fiction, it has shined a new light for me on real history of a corner of the world that American students don't hear of unless they seek it out in their extended studies. If you believe, as I truly do, that those who don't understand history are doomed to repeat it, you will appreciate the setting and thoughtfulness of this book. The author says, and it reads true, that "I have composed my work of fiction in a spirit of respectful grief for those whose lives were touched by the real history on which it is based."

Also add The Swan Thieves to your shelf ;)
