Zombicorns by John Green
5.0

Okay, okay, okay- hear me out. Zombicorns* was everything that I wanted it to be from the outset. I donated my dollars to charity (I'm late on the bandwagon, but that doesn't mean I'm a slacker!), I had a boring test to proctor, so this was excellent reading.

John Green, as per ushe, adds a lot of big thoughtful questions to his novel. Zombicorns deals with the idea of humanness after the world has mostly ended. The main character has to grapple with living in a world where most of the population is no-longer "alive"- how does morality play into this world? How do friendships exist? Those sorts of things.

SpoilerWhat I particularly loved about this novel was the seemingly placed "twist" about a third of the way through the story. John Green whips out a female protagonist, Mia. Now, this doesn't seem like a big deal, but I was convinced she was a he until she talked about losing her maidenhead (which I can appreciate).

I think that people in general were put off by this "twist" because Mia talks and thinks like John Green's other male characters- Miles, Q, etc. - and I think it was hard for avid John Green readers to see that this is more of a writing style than a strictly-boys-only voice. Or maybe I'm just very forgiving. Most likely the second one.

This book also contained a very lovely female/female relationship, and there are no real male characters. As a fan of the zombie genre, I hunger (heh) for female characters in post-apocalypse zombie world. Max Brooks did a wonderful job of this in his novels, and I think John Green does a pretty good job too, for 72 pages of charity driven writing. I just really liked the idea of two young girls, generally considered frivolous/fangirly/weak/silly by society, rampaging against the zombie horde. I feel like there is something more to this- how those we dismiss are, in fact, the best equipped to survive the end of the world? THESE ARE THE THINGS!

Overall, this was a fun short story to read. I recommend it to anyone with an hour or two to kill. And with that, DFTBA.

*Not about Unicorns- it even says so on the cover so stop COMPLAINING that there are NO UNICORNS. It is a well known fact that John Green does not abide by their kind.
