Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie

He wrote this so young and there is so much that is brilliance here and it's also a great first novel to read as a writer because it is often very clear what he is doing - giving backstory, using cultural context to bolster his case, fantasy to show the plight of the main character. This is not an easy read, it's an angry harsh sad book but it teaches you about being an Indian in contemporary society as well as a lot about writing .
