The Woman in the Window
by A.J. Finn
This was a disappointing read for me. So many people loved this, and I can kind of see why. The premise sounded so interesting - a reclusive woman spots something shocking from her window! Did it really happen? Who did it?
But it relies on tropes that have been used before - the alcoholic narrator, for example. Anna is a compelling, believable character, and I liked her, but I've seen this used before, and it is getting old. Create the unreliability, the disbelief, by making her a crazy, pill-popping alcoholic. I wish people would find a new way to tell stories like this.
Something else that disappointed me was one of the twists. I saw it coming a mile off, as yet again, I've read it before. I didn't guess who had done it, but by the time we got to that point, I had stopped caring and just wanted to finish the book.
I did like the writing, however, and I liked reading about Anna, and her struggles with agoraphobia and dealing with the trauma that led to her becoming that way.
Overall, I rated it two stars - a disappointing read.
