I really want to love this book more. The art style is simplistic and in places feels more barren than it ought to. The story is a lovely one for young readers, representing a Trans main character and her loving friends and family. The story starts with a plot but not really with character so I wish that had been more fleshed out.

This is a great start for New Zealand authors showing the way and providing a broader choice of representation in fiction. I love that enough that I bought a copy rather than trying to find a library copy to borrow, but I want MORE for my children.

This feels like it's aimed at beginner readers, and as a result I wonder if there being a romantic interest is misplaced. Typically books for 6-year-olds don't mean a lot to them when there is a kissy ending, but hey... I guess Disney needs a little push back. I do love Trans characters being celebrated and finding love, but now I want to see that in a book for 12-year-olds :)
