All Adults Here by Emma Straub

Apologies are complicated. Individuals in our society, generally, have a difficult time identifying feelings of shame. At its best moments, this novel allowed the reader to witness an individual fully recognize the error of their ways, sit with that feeling, and then attempt to address it in whatever way makes sense with the situation.

While I loved the relaxed and non-gimmicky plot (there were no real extremes and a lot of true-to-life interactions that I appreciated), I was most taken by the fact that this book took up the idea of shame with a good deal of grace. That said, it could absolutely have gone further -- and maybe it didn't for reasons that I can't intuit. But we need more, I think...especially these days. Especially for white audiences, honestly.
