Gone to the Forest by Katie Kitamura

4.0

Not quite sure what to make out of it. The book is definitely metaphorical, a tragedy told through the perspectives of a colonizer and his family. There are few white people living in a colonized land (the actual geographical setting is not revealed), realize that the natives are unrest and the new government may help them grab land/property from the rich. They decide they have to leave the land as soon as possible and make the necessary plans. To this situation is added, the arrival of Carine to the family of Tom, a volcanic eruption, a feast arranged that turns out into sexual flourishes. With the impending doom of the civil rebellion looming in the atmosphere, the last days of the colonizers are depicted. The prose is beautiful and sparse and is a treat. Highly recommended, although I could not make out a lot of the connections.
