"We stood in a circle gazing down at her. No one said a word. No one could. But when someone began to sing the song Rebecca had sung we all joined in, the outlaw Ojibway rising in the air."
Indian Horse is a life changing book to say the least. You can tell after reading it and talking to others who have read it that it has a profound impact on the way we see the world around us.
Through Saul, we can see so much of the horror, the xenophobia and the abuse that destroys some people every day because of hateful thought. But we can also see the beauty of the land we live on, the communities that support us no matter what and the passions we find in the things we love.
Many books have demonstrated the duality of the beautiful and the painful in our world. What really hit me though about Indian Horse is how incredibly poetic it is through its writing as well as the hope it gives me for the future of Canada that is moving towards reconciliation.
Because, the beauty of this land and its people will always stay but we can always do something to reduce its hate.
