Dracula by Bram Stoker

4.0

"Dracula was not at all what I expected. There was very little action and very little blood. If you are somebody that has to have fast-paced action then this is not a book for you. I however, found it fascinating. It is the ideas, the story, and the characters' reflections on their condition, their humanity, their enemy, etc. that make the book interesting. After reading, it makes me laugh to think how the concept of the vampire has evolved into some kind of beautiful super hero. Stoker does a wonderful job of inciting a loathing for the creatures he describes. There were a few parts that I found a little confusing, but I found this a minor irritation compared to the fascination of the storyline. Finally, many people seem to have a problem with the epistolary format. I confess I did get a little tired of reading journal entries about 2/3rds of the way through. Also, the way Stoker brings the story together I thought the end would tedious. I was very wrong. The end was wonderful, and the epilogue was short but satisfying. Not a light read, but a very satisfying book.
