snw0723 's review for:
Keeper of the Lost Cities

So this review is really for the first half of the series. I am on book 6 in a week - I am a fast reader but this is fast even for me. They are very interesting and suspenseful, and fantasy is only sometimes my thing. It's like Lord of the Rings mixed with Harry Potter, but with less of a pre planned story - so it meanders more... Like those other two you can tell planned that story out to every detail. Hints of the end of Harry Potter are all over the first book once you know. It's actually one of my favorite things about it because it's just that intricate of a story line. So writing isn't as good to me in this one, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I did just compare it to two epic series after all. Story line is similar to Harry Potter in a lot of ways - young girl with special powers not raised by her family and didn't know, suddenly thrust in a new world and learning about her powers, her mentor constantly keeping secrets, and a bunch of teenagers save the world. But it has plenty of different elements to keep you interested and the world is far more reminiscent of LOTR.
As far as clean and appropriate for tweens, it totally is that but I do feel there is a little too much romance too young. I mean I think the timeline maybe is different for her elves as far as age and romance. But it would be better if the books started with her, say, 15 based on all the crushes going around. She comes across a little bit crazy at 13 and 14 honestly. That said as of yet they haven't even started kissing a bunch or anything (my 11 year old said one book had a lot of kissing but he's a boy and that could mean one kiss). I also haven't finished the series.
Actually it's not finished being written yet.
One thing I like though is she finds out her age is wrong because she's counting from her birthday and it's explained they count from "inception" (meaning conception) because your birth day is just the day you take your first breath of air, nothing special, inception is when you start. I was like, wow that's like an anti abortion message wrapped up in a nice elf bow. So it was a nice spot in a completely secular book by the way.
