Toni Morrison is an undeniably talented writer. Her prose is so unique in literature I’ve read, but it feels familiar to me like hearing stories from my grandmothers.

The story reminded me of the powerlessness you feel as a black child, at the mercy of the world and the adults in your life. The author also does a good job at showing the everyday horrors and traumas that pepper our lives and that we are conditioned to ignore.

In the case of Pecola, it seemed like she was never in the care of people who really loved her in the ways she needed. It is a haunting telling of the battering a child will take in the world without adults who are committed to being caretakers. Claudia worked as a good stand in for the audience with the frustration we can feel of knowing what’s right, or fair and being powerless to actually protect the people who need it.

The book is a slow burn, that requires a lot of the reader to piece together the events of the story and the humanity of every single character.
