Watchmen by Alan Moore
4.0

I loved the gritty and grounded nature of much of this highly recommended graphic novel. I thought the world building was brilliant with the backdrop of the Cold War and the sleezy streets of New york with its unsavoury denizens. The characters were also explored well and were all multifaceted and interesting - especially for a superhero book in the 90s -. A stand out was rorschach, a gritty, out of touch detective who presented an interesting contrast to the group. Additionally, the ever awkward, very alien Jon. The art was consistently good throughout, I love gibbons striking use of colour and his facial art. Whilst at times the story felt slow and seemingly unconnected, (especially the pirate comic that is read throughout) the last chapter really puts a spin on things making you reconsider the whole work and contemplate the greater good and the responsibility of those with power.
Overall, watchmen is a great comic and whilst I did not enjoy it as much as some die hard fans, I thought it provided an interesting change from the typical superhero genre presenting some interesting wider ideas.
